#102 UFO Experience as a Parapsychological Event

On March 3, 2020 Fahrusha welcomed two guests to “Shattered Reality Podcast”. The first was a lovely woman, “Jennifer”, a listener who is personally known to Fahrusha. She related an amazing synchronicity involving a new baby, a generous half sister, and the half sister’s recently deceased mother. At the 1:47 point in the recording you will hear what sounds like a male voice breaking into the recording saying “eemah-ho”. We here at “Shattered Reality Podcast” have no idea of the source of this voice. “Jennifer’s” uncle had passed the night before, but she says it was not his voice. This remains a mystery.

After that otherworldly start, our second very impressive guest, was Dr. Eric Ouellet, military scientist and author of Illuminations: The UFO Experience as a Parapsychological Event, published by Anomalist Books. He has a Ph.D. in Sociology from York University, Toronto. Dr. Ouellet is an Associate Professor in the Department of Defence Studies with the Royal Military College of Canada, physically located at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto. He began the interview by explaining the reasons for the military’s interest in the UFO topic.

Eric’s personal hypothesis about UFOs stems from the sociological model of German physicist and parapsychologist, Walter von Lucadou, Ph.D. concerning poltergeist phenomena and we discussed poltergeist cases for a brief interval before applying that hypothesis to UFOs. Fahrusha mentioned that she did not think all UFO cases must of necessity stem from the same source. Perhaps a few might be extraterrestrial while others might be a co-creation of the human psyche with higher forces. Eric Ouellet did not see the need for other “higher” forces to be employed, that the human mind is capable of creating these visible artifacts which can be seen by numbers of individuals.

He went on to explain how the Rendlesham Forest incident in Great Britain over the Christmas Holiday of 1980 could be explained through the von Lucadou sociological model used for poltergeists. Fahrusha asked Eric a few enlightening questions which were sent in by Maryam, a mutual acquaintance and “Shattered Reality Podcast” listener. Dr. Ouellet is currently involved in a collaborative work about Marian apparitions. #45 Tom Butler and EVPs

Kate Valentine and Fahrusha welcome Tom Butler, expert on the EVP phenomena and author of Your Immortal Self: Exploring the Mindful Way. EVP stands for Electronic Voice Phenomena. The practice of using electronics to record the voices of entities was brought to the public eye by Latvian writer and parapsychologist Konstantīns Raudive and Swedish painter and film producer Friedrich Jürgenson.

Tom and his wife Lisa Butler manage the A Trans C which stands for Association TransCommunication. The organization was started by the late Sarah Estep in 1982 as the American Association of Electronic Voice Phenomena (AA-EVP). Her objective was to “provide objective evidence that we survive physical death in our individual conscious state.” Tom Butler explains the basics of the EVP phenomena and links it to his understanding of human consciousness. We got a huge surprise when we bid Tom good-bye and were wrapping up the show. Suddenly on Kate’s track only we recorded an EVP. Kate and Fahrusha and our audio engineer, Bill, were all in the same room in plain sight of one another. We were totally surprised and flummoxed. We were all rather baffled. Here is what Tom had to say when we forwarded the clip to him:

“Lisa and I agree that it does sound like a voice and assuming it was not voice from the room, it fits our expectation of EVP. As we hear it, there is a “Woup” voice sound shortly followed by a gurgling sound and then the prolonged “Ohhhhh.” We like to think of EVP as communication, but knowing they are often watching in, and how people in the peanut gallery like to comment on the goings on, I would not be surprised to learn the speaker was making a choking sound and then laughing about his or her cleverness. The speaker sounds like a young person

“The thing is, we will likely never know. Many EVP are simply comments for which we have no references. Examples of such EVP can accumulate pretty fast, so except for their novelty, we usually suggest they are discarded. Else, we become overwhelmed with unanswerable questions. Your example does fit into the novelty category, as most peanut gallery comments are not as clear.

“One of the things to look for is where the utterance showed up in the equipment. We think EVP is formed in a specific process, say a transistor junction in an amplifier. We expect the place to be analog and nonlinear, as stochastic amplification is more likely in such energy environments. So, if the voice was in all headsets, look to the amplifier of the studio, but we would expect it to be upstream from the output amplifier. If the EVP made it into the recording memory, we would think it was formed somewhere in the input stage between the microphone and the memory conversion process.
