On June 2, 2020 Fahrusha was very pleased to host Lisette Coly, head of the Parapsychology Foundation and granddaughter of famed Irish medium Eileen Garrett, on “Shattered Reality Podcast”. We spoke about what it was like to grow up with one of the Twentieth Century’s most famous mediums as her grandmother. Lisette told us some fascinating family stories exhibiting Eileen Garrett’s psychic prowess.

Eileen Coly, mother of Lisette Coly, daughter of Eileen Garrett and former head of the Parapsychology Foundation

Lisette’s mother, Eileen Coly (1916-2013), kept the family legacy going for many years through running the Parapsychology Foundation from 1970 until 2003. Born and educated in England, she was very dedicated to the systematic and scientific study of the paranormal. Lisette has worked at the Foundation since 1969 and has worn many hats, including initially receptionist in her college years, and then becoming Executive Director and finally President after her mother’s retirement. While working at the Foundation both mother and daughter referred to Eileen Garrett simply as “Garrett” to differentiate the personage from the familial connection.

Eileen Garrett, Irish medium and founder of the Parapsychology Foundation

Eileen Jeanette Vancho Lyttle Garrett (1893 – 1970) was an Irish medium and parapsychologist born in County Meath. Most unfortunately her parents committed suicide. This may have been pivotal in provoking her psychic abilities. She spent some years in England honing her gifts before moving to the US with her daughter Eileen Coly. She was a very popular and accomplished medium and the founder of the Parapsychology Foundation in 1951. She wrote seven books on psychic subject matter.

#94 Sociological Research on Remarkable Experiences with Dr. Jim McClenon

Dr. James McClenon, sociologist and author of The Entity Letters, A Sociologist on the Trail of a Supernatural Mystery

To listen Click HERE

Fahrusha was happy to welcome Dr. James McClenon to Shattered Reality Podcast for the second time to discuss the different way that a sociologist researches paranormal and anomalous experiences. He was the guest on an earlier show in which he discusses his excellent book The Entity Letters, A Sociologist on the Trail of a Supernatural Mystery.

We covered a variety of topics from healing to shamanism to UFOs to out of body experiences and extrasensory perception but with a focus on the near death experience (NDE), all from the perspective of sociology. McClenon worked by collecting the extraordinary experiences of individuals by distributing questionaires. He had his students distribute questionaires as well. At first most of the answers came from a rural area in North Carolina where he taught. Later he distributed questionaires from a teaching cruise ship that sailed around the world making stops at a variety of locations. The conclusions he came to were from a different point of view than those of parapsychologists, philosophers or physicists. It was very refreshing to look at these subjects from a differing perspective. Most surprising, perhaps, is his assertion that in other cultures individuals don’t necessarily remember their near death experiences as paradigm changing events that were hyper-real. As a person who has had transcendent experiences but not an NDE, I (Fahrusha) cannot judge this, but it seems counter to other research.

Much of the material we covered on this episode can be found in Dr. McClenon’s book Wondrous Healing.

Third Eye Spies is the new movie from the father of remote viewing Russell Targ and film maker Lance Mungia

On May 14, 2019, Fahrusha was very pleased to welcome physicist Russell Targ and filmmaker Lance Mungia to “Shattered Reality Podcast” to discuss their film Third Eye Spies. The film chronicles the story of the government’s remote viewing program with emphasis on viewer Pat Price and the role of physicists Russell Targ and Hal Puthoff. Many accounts of events in and around the movie were discussed that were absolutely fascinating. Many of the people discussed in the film are still in the forefront of psi research today while others remain totally anonymous. What actually happened to the amazing Pat Price is still something of a mystery, since there a number of conflicting narratives regarding his death. The film is available for sale through the website, and on rental and download from Amazon, iTunes, and other vendors.

Russ kindly gave a number of pointers to those, like listener Earl, who would like to try remote viewing on their own.

Sad note: Yesterday the world of ufology lost a legend, nuclear physicist Stanton T. Friedman. Rest In Peace. He was a very approachable and friendly man whose contribution the study of anomalous aerial phenomena. I feel privileged to have met him and spoken to him several times.

Errata: This is the 87th “Shattered Reality Podcast” not the 89th.

#86 Anomalous Happenings in Hudson County NJ

to show the area discussed

Hudson County, New Jersey map.

To listen click HERE.

On March 26, 2019, Fahrusha interviewed Kate, a loquacious and interesting “Shattered Reality Podcast” listener, about her anomalous experiences in Hudson County, New Jersey. Closer to Manhattan than many parts of the five boroughs of New York City, Hudson County is steeped in its own legends and paranormal happenings. This is a short interview focused on Kate’s family experiences with the world of spiritual after-death contact. We also briefly cover a UFO flap of the ’60s. Think of Budd Hopkins’ recounting of the UFO landing in the park on Boulevard East, it is the same flap.

The interview is relatively short, but we think you will enjoy it. Strangely Kate’s story somewhat mirrors the experiences of another listener we interviewed, June Ponte, from Hudson County.

If you are a listener to “Shattered Reality Podcast”, even if you are not from Hudson County, and would like to tell us about your paranormal experiences please get in touch by leaving a message on this posting.

#79 The Spirit Room of Jonathan Koons with Sharon Hatfield

Sharon Hatfield, author of Enchanted Ground: The Spirit Room of Jonathan Koons.

Fahrusha was pleased to welcome Sharon Hatfield, author of Enchanted Ground: The Spirit Room of Jonathan Koons to “Shattered Reality Podcast”. We covered the history of Jonathan Koons as regards his career as a famous American Spiritualist during the middle of the Nineteenth Century. Fahrusha was pleased to note that the author did not decide on the veracity of Mr. Koons’ claims of physical mediumship. It is difficult enough to vet the claims of those with whom one is contemporaneous, no less the claims of those who are long gone. No one is currently alive who ever met Jonathan Koons so there are no witnesses. There does exist ample critique of this man’s seances in publications of the day, and they are both positive and negative. In addition Mr. Koons, himself, was a prolific, if opaque, writer on matters spiritual.

Jonathan Koons did not charge money to attend the seances, but did sometimes charge board to those who lodged with his family, so his motives were not influenced by personal enrichment. His entire family participated in this endeavor and he had eleven natural children and one adopted daughter, although not all lived to adulthood. One son, Nahum, was often the centerpiece of these gatherings and was considered quite gifted. Magnetic anomalies in the ground on the ridge where the seances took place just outside Athens, Ohio are believed by some to be the cause of the unusual effects produced in the Spirit Room. Others point to poltergeist activity due to the raging hormones of so many pubescent children.

We also discussed other notables of the day, including D. D. Home, the Fox Sisters, and somewhat surprisingly, John Chapman colloquially known as “Johnny Appleseed”. He was a staple character in American history texts in public schools across the US, famed for planting apple trees where ever he wandered, but few know him as the Swedenborgian spiritualist he actually was. Currently physical mediumship is looked down upon in many but not all spiritualist circles in the US, though it receives better treatment in the UK.

“Shattered Reality Podcast” appreciates all comments and “likes” on its various platforms. We respond as quickly as possible. Thanks for your participation.

#72 George P. Hansen the Trickster

George P. Hansen, author of The Trickster and the Paranormal.

Fahrusha and Kate Valentine were pleased to welcome illustrious author and paranormal investigator George P. Hansen to “Shattered Reality Podcast”. There was so much to speak about that it was difficult to fit it into an hour and fifteen minutes. Hansen looks at the paranormal from the view of anthropology and skepticism but never debunking. He views many of the phenomena of the paranormal as being affected and sometimes caused by the Trickster. He gives two compatible definitions of who or what the Trickster is, the first of which concerns the folk traditions of many, if not all, indigenous cultures around the world. Some of the famous folk tricksters are Loki of Norse mythology, the Coyote of the American Southwest, Iktomi (spider) of the Lakota and Ananzi (spider) of the Caribbean and Africa. These Tricksters are shapeshifters so they can appear in different guises. In his words “The trickster archetype is not designated by immediately observable physical features.  Rather it is a more abstract constellation of characteristics that is usually personified (i.e., identified with a person or animal).”  His second definition is a bit more ephemeral to explain. It includes many aspects of psi including boundary crossing, irrationality, fakery, change and instability and it is, by its very nature, non-binary.

We tackle many subjects, especially including UFOs. For instance these objects are often seen to be shapeshifting, and some might be interstellar or not, and of course they may have more than one origin and they often appear at times of great change. The purported occupants may lie to humans or their communication may seem absurd or be misunderstood. They often appear to people when those people are in altered states of consciousness, as in the liminal state.

#42 Psychic Experiences of Psi Explorers

In this podcast episode #42, Kate Valentine and Fahrusha speak to two Psi Explorers and one listener about their personal psychic experiences.

Russell Targ and Fahrusha at the 2016 SSE Symposium (courtesy of Rosanna Schaffer-Shaw)

First up is Russell Targ, formerly of the Stanford Research Institute, and one of the originators of remote viewing. His two stories of his own precognitive dreams are thought-provoking. He emphasizes that psychic dreams and other psi phenomena are normal and these experiences can be had by anyone. We just need to be attentive to them.

Russell Targ’s latest book The of Reality of ESP, A Physicist’s Proof of Psychic Abilities is an excellent book explaining several different but related psi abilities and substantial examples from his professional experience. A trailer for his movie about the history of the US government’s Remote Viewing program and his participation in it can be seen at the website thirdeyespies.com.

Dr. Michael Grosso, author of "The Man Who Could Fly"

Dr. Michael Grosso, author of “The Man Who Could Fly”

Next up is Dr. Michael Grosso who tells two stories from his own collection of personal psychic experiences. The first is the story of a beautiful Christmas miracle (I can’t tell you more because that would be a spoiler) and the second is a precognitive dream he had as a child. His most recent book is The Man Who Could Fly: St. Joseph of Copertino and the Mystery of Levitation.

Listener Peter completes this episode with a very strange ghostly experience he had at the illustrious old Hotel Del Coronado in California in the early 1990’s.

Notes: During the episode Fahrusha mentioned an opinion piece on her blog which was reprinted by George Filer on Filer’s Files. We want to also thank Ken Pfeifer for also reprinting it. The article is called Extraterrestrial Evolution.
